"3 years ago I was lucky enough to purchase a Princess 43 motorboat however I had only limited knowledge of boating at this time and so decided it would be necessary to get some formal qualifications.

Phil Soltys was my instructor for the practical side of the exam and we used the wonderful Yolo to complete this exam. I am not a big one for learning at my age but Phil made the whole process enjoyable and fun whilst still ensuring that the vast amount of information was being retained and skills passed on from his extensive knowledge and experience.

The day skipper course unfortunately falls down where extended experience and wheel time is required and so I contracted Phil to do further training on my own boat and am happy to say that I now feel fully confident to take my own boat out in more tricky conditions.

I first met Phil Soltys, when I successfully completed a week long course in 2014, which was concluded with a RYA YM offshore practical exam.

He has a vast depth and range of knowledge across all aspects of the various subjects and skill sets that are involved. His years of experience and high level of patience come to the fore front when teaching. This really shows when teaching mixed ability groups on board, often with testing weather conditions.

Apart from coaching us through the process of gaining commercial endorsement, our time spent under instruction from Phil has greatly increased our self-confidence, and underlined the importance of safety and good seamanship.

His attention to detail in covering the subject matter is second to none. This is all carried out in a professional but relaxed fashion, which promotes a considered approach in his students.
